We were two weeks away from leaving on a missions trip to Chile. Our team leader was trying to prepare us and handing out duties such as prayer leaders, laundry, worship, etc. As far as I knew I was the only worship leader on the team and would be the obvious choice. I had been playing both in venues and in churches and fully knew what it took to do this job.
As he went around naming who would do what, he finally came to announce who the worship leader would and paused.. then said. “Brent will be leading worship on the trip.” Wait what? You must of made a mistake, don’t you know how good I am at worship, and you just want me to carry the sound equipment around?
I put my head down frustrated and feeling rejected and began to cry softly to myself. I didn’t want anyone to see that it really affected me. They just didn’t know that music was my life … the only way for me to unwind and let it all out.
Ever had someone picked over you? Ever feel hurt & angry when it happened? Maybe its happened your whole life… You’ve worked so hard to make yourself amazing, to be able to compete, until your ‘arrive’ at this place, this moment and everyone knows your name.
God was starting to break my heart and that was the second time he reminded me that my life was no longer … mine.
“I have called you by your name, you are mine!” When we became Christians and confessed with our mouths that Jesus is our Saviour, we became his because He (Jesus) gave his life for ours, for our sins.
“You did not chose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go & bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain…”
It’s an easy thing to forget. Everything around us in the world says our lives should be lived for ourselves and anyone can make a name for themselves. Yes, there are many reasons we tend to want to be noticed, to be given worth or our due. And we might try to justify it by saying to others, “Don’t you know who I am?!”
“but I chose you out of this world…”
This is the key… He chose you out of this world. Meaning God has something different, better, more fulfilling, a life with great purpose designed specifically for you. Jesus even goes on to tell us that we shouldn’t worry about our lives and that he’ll take care of us.
“He who has found his life will lose it, and he who has lost his life for My sake will find it.”
Most importantly, Jesus is also saying life is about losing it, surrendering it to him. Give him access. Trust the God who created you to come in and take over. All of your dreams, your plans & aspirations. God knows exactly who you are. In fact he’s got a great purpose for you.
